Sailor Endures 16 Hours Of Pain Waiting For Help

Thai Sailor Kongnapa Raysee had to endure 16 hours of pain from injuries he received when a wave smashed into him on board his ship. He suffered injuries to the head, eye and chin. The vessel, MV Itha Bhum was passing through the Natuna waters off Indonesia when the incident occurred.

The ship’s Captain Voon Kon called the Indonesian authorities and the Royal Malaysian Air Force base in Labuan for assistance. "But the weather was bad and we tried to ease his pain with whatever medicines we had while waiting for help to arrive," Voon said. The Thai-registered vessel had left Singapore and was on its way to Manila.

At 8.30pm when the sea became calm, Voon called the state Marine Department. Three hours later, help arrived and Kongnapa was taken to the Sarawak Hospital. Kongnapa, who has been on the vessel for the past eight months, said he never thought that a wave could hit him like that. "I have been on other vessels but this is my worst experience," he said.
