Distress Calls From Missing Boat May Be Hoax

The Coast Guard says it's suspended a search for a small boat believed to be carrying six people, turning now to investigate purported distress calls as a possible hoax. The calls were made as strong wind and driving rain swept into South Carolina Thursday night. The Coast Guard says helicopters searched Thursday night and Friday but found no boat or debris on the beach or in the water. Captain John Cameron, a Coast Guard commander, says search conditions were perfect Friday and a hoax was suspected because nothing had turned up. He said buoys indicated that anything in the ocean should have washed ashore.
