Helicopter Lifts Stranded People From Ship

A Royal Navy helicopter airlifted the injured Captain of a grounded cargo ship after severe winds repeatedly prevented his rescue, a report said. Six others were rescued from the ship after winds and waves died down, allowing a helicopter to reach them. None were seriously injured. Two dozen other crew members were still on the ship.

The Captain of the 12,900-ton Horncliff cargo ship was transported to Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske. Coastguards said the captain had injury to his spine and internal bleeding. The Horncliff reportedly was on its way to Dover from Costa Rica when the storm caused it to lose 59 containers of bananas and other fruits.
