Firefighters Handle Miami River Cargo Ship Fire

Officials Sunday said that more than 100 firefighters have extinguished a massive fire on a cargo ship on the Miami River. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the fire burned for three hours while crews worked to put out the flames on the ship. All nine crew members were evacuated. No injuries have been reported.City and county firefighters responded to the ship at about 8 p.m., with flames and billowing smoke blowing from the cargo area of the 200-foot freighter, called the Atlantic. The ship was carrying cars, mattresses and bicycles among other items to Haiti. The estimated damage has not been released. The fire forced nearby vessels to relocate to safer locations. No other vessels were damaged.
