Global Ship Location System Begins

The Japan Coast Guard began operating a system Wednesday that can locate and identify Japanese ships on international voyages to enhance their safety and security.The introduction of the system is required under the 2006 amendment to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, of which Japan is a signatory. The United States proposed navigation safety measures be introduced internationally after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
