Crew Forced Stowaways To Jump Ship

Two Ukrainians were expected to appear in Durban magistrate's court on murder and attempted-murder charges after allegedly throwing seven Kenyans off a ship in harbour, said KwaZulu-Natal police. Captain Gugu Sabela said it was suspected that two of the seven Kenyans from the country's coastal town of Mombasa drowned in Durban harbour when they were thrown overboard on Wednesday evening, allegedly by the cabin crew.

She said police were searching for their bodies. Five others survived and were in police custody. Sabela said the vessel "African Kalahari" was bound for South America. The two Ukrainians would be charged with two counts of murder and five of attempted murder. Sabela said a charge of aiding and abetting would be brought against the ship's Captain. "We are still investigating," said Sabela. "The two Ukrainians are expected to appear in court today. We are just waiting for an interpreter because they (the Ukrainians) don't speak English."
