Injured Sailor Has Surgery

Injured crew member Mark Maidment, who broke his leg when Pete Goss' Spirit of Mystery was hit by a freak wave, has had an operation in Australia. The 44-year-old is recovering in hospital after surgeons fitted a metal rod in his leg, which was broken in two places.
Spirit of Mystery
He was onboard the 37ft Cornish Lugger, skippered by Pete Goss, when it was struck by the huge wave off Kangaroo Island, near south Australia. The wooden vessel was knocked over and Mark, Pete's brother-in-law, suffered a fracture to his right leg between knee and ankle. Mark was taken below and treated by the crew who administered morphine and applied a splint.
