Reports have surfaced that the Princess Ashika was being repaired at night in Tonga to avoid public scrutiny of the ferry's seaworthiness before its fatal voyage.
The Tongan Kele'a newspaper made the revelation, referring to the contents of a letter written by the head of the Ports Authority, Commander Lupeti Vi, to Tongan Prime Minister Feleti Sevele on August 11, six days after the sea tragedy. Mr Sevele had said the ship was seaworthy.
