Fire Crews Battle Nova Scotia Ship Blaze
Halifax fire crews were working Saturday morning to quench a stubborn fire on a decommissioned Coast Guard vessel tied to a Dartmouth, N.S., dock. Halifax Regional Fire Capt. Dave Meldrum said firefighters responded to the call at about 4:30 a.m. local time after smoke and flames were noticed on the top two decks of the vessel named Tupper when in the service of the Canadian Coast Guard. The vessel, which is now under private ownership, was empty when firefighters arrived and is currently undergoing repairs."It's not in service, there is no crew onboard, no obvious power source," said Meldrum. "We don't understand what started this fire yet." By mid-morning, firefighters had stopped the fire from spreading and were drawing up their plans to contain and quench the fire, said Meldrum. Meldrum said officials from the Department of National Defence and the Coast Guard were also on the scene at the Dartmouth Marine Slips complex.
